We love Maria and Maria loves us
A performance about religion, healing, carework, gender and clubbing
Galerie Melike Bilir / Hamburg
10. und 11. 7. 2021
Although most on this team are not religious, Christianity is an important background in our various social imprints. This is the Mexican and the North German Catholicism, South German and Danish Protestantism, and the Maria Lionza cult from Venezuela. For us, Mary is a figure that is, in the context of the Christian narrative, not suitable for identification and whose interpretations are often completely stereotyped. Yet her loving and healing gestures, gazes, and postures are deeply rooted in the DNA of our attachment culture.
The work is constituted at an intersection of sculpturally conceived strategies, our choreographic practice, and the current discourse around the role of healing and caring practices. Beyond this discourse, we were also interested in questioning biographical and authentic motifs; in this process, the attributions overlap and intermingle
